To build up walking speed, take longer strides and quicken your pace. Here's what Dr. Mirkin recommends:
"Every time you move your left leg forward, swing your left arm backward. Bend your arms at the elbow as you coordinate arm swings with leg movements. The faster you move your arms, the faster your legs will move.
"To take the longest strides possible, waddle from side to side. Swivel your hips one hundred eighty degrees as you stride forward, swinging your arms and bending your elbows as much as you can.
"Don't overdo it. When your legs feel tired, or heavy, slow your pace until they recover and then gradually pick up the pace again. No need to do this every day. Three thirty minute fast-walking sessions a week will keep you fit.
