EXERCISING YOUR RIGHT TO GOOD HEALTH: SO, CAN WE ALL SIT DOWN NOW AND TAKE IT EASY? YOU CAN RAISE HDL LEVELS BY EXERCISING

The older you are the more benefit from exercise. It doesn't matter how fit you once were. After you stop exercising you lose almost all measurable benefits. If you want to live longer, it's more important to exercise when you're old than when you're young.
We'll wager this is not the first time you've read that health authorities make a big deal of exercise. Sports medicine expert Dr. Gabe Mirkin reports, "The research data shows that the more fit you are, the less likely you are to suffer a heart attack. High intensity exercise prevents heart attacks.
"A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that a high level of physical fitness is associated with a markedly reduced susceptibility to developing heart attacks."
How come? Exercisers have high HDL levels - and the more HDL (the 'good' cholesterol) you have in your blood stream, the less likely you'll have a heart attack. At least, that's the current opinion.
Dr. Paul Thompson of Brown University has looked into this phenomena and feels that HDL may not prevent heart attacks directly, but may be a marker signifying a person's increased ability to clear fat from the bloodstream.
As Dr. Thompson explains: "Lipoproteins are large balls that float in your bloodstream, that contain cholesterol, a fat called triglyceride and are covered with a protein coat.
"When you exercise, LDL lipoproteins bring triglycerides to muscle cells to supply them with fuel. Simultaneously, they release cholesterol to HDL lipoproteins and increase blood levels of HDL"
Dr. Thompson's message is clear: "You can raise HDL levels by exercising.’
