EXERCISING YOUR RIGHT TO GOOD HEALTH: SO, CAN WE ALL SIT DOWN NOW AND TAKE IT EASY?

Not so fast.
According to health experts, once people begin to exercise regularly, they tend to take better care of themselves in other ways as well - including improving their diet The typical 40 year old man who doesn't exercise, also doesn't wear a seat belt, smokes two packs a day, and is 30% overweight. As noted experts in sports medicine have observed, 'exercisers'become more health-conscious and are more likely to make health-promoting changes in all aspects of their lives.
Ironically, it doesn't always work the other way around. People who DO take rather good care of themselves in other ways, often neglect exercise. Many fitness buffs who don't smoke, drink, eat a sensible diet and stick to their vitamin regimens, fail to appreciate the importance of exercise.
One of America's best known nutritionists, Carlton Fredericks, whose books, syndicated newspaper columns, radio and television programs brought health education to millions, was fond of quoting a 1930's era wit who said: "The secret of my abundant health is that whenever the impulse to exercise comes over me, I lie down until it passes away."
After which Fredericks would add: "I get all the exercise I need acting as pallbearers for my friends who exercise."
Funny - but hardly supported by the facts that provide powerful ammunition for the pro-exercise camp. Prominent among the exercise drop-outs are those who believe - or hope - they've stored up enough exercise 'credits' in their youth to last them a lifetime. High school and college 'jocks' are the prime culprits. They gaze fondly at mementos of their school day exploits and figure they've done enough running, stretching and jumping to insure a healthful future.
They're kidding themselves. Unless you keep on exercising, you're no better off than the guy who sat on the sidelines by exercising." and cheered. Studies show that middle-aged men who were once very active in sports, have no fewer heart attacks than their sedentary counterparts - UNLESS they continued keeping in shape.
