Just as you might suspect, the fitness boom is a mirage. Despite all the health club ballyhoo, and Cher's urging to join her in the body-building craze, most Americans still exercise their minds more than their bodies. One survey showed that 87% of all running shoe buyers never- you guessed it - run! Thinking about exercise is obviously a lot easier than doing it. That's especially true if you're financially comfortable. Statistics confirm the more money you make, the less physically active you are. Upward mobility expands the waistline as well as the bank balance, it seems.
TV star Susan St. James, now well into her forty-somethings, confesses she's resorted to hiring a seventy-five dollar an hour personal trainer to come to her home daily. "If the doorbell doesn't ring, I hardly move," she tells.
In this respect, she's kin to the not-so-famous - especially those middle-aged and older who consider it real exertion when they get up out of their easy chairs to switch TV channels instead of using their remote tuners.
