If you're like most people, you can stand to be 'good' just so long. After a few days - or weeks - of munching on rice cakes, drowning your sorrows with mineral water, sticking to a lean cuisine and bypassing the fix-your-own dessert bar, chances are you suddenly switch gears and dig into chocolate cake heaped with Haagen-Dazs ice cream, and try to forget what you've done with a stiff drink.
Psychologist Ray Browne, chairman of the popular culture department at Bowling Green State University, says this is a very familiar eating pattern. "Once a dieter strays from the straight and narrow, he goes nuts."
Dr. Barry Popkin, professor of Nutrition at UNC, calls this recurring syndrome the 'Yuppie Diet': exercise like crazy, cut back to 700 calories a day, then splurge on a whipped cream dessert and a bag of candy bars.
Why do we do it?
"People who have been virtuous feel they've earned the right to be self-indulgent," he says.
